Tara Bell is our Director of Social Action and Education. She holds a BA in Philosophy, MA in Literature, and a Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies Certification from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. A member of Equality Il’s Community Advisory Group, she has also served on Treasurer Michael Frerich’s LGBTQ Advisory Committee.
Tara was a member of the Board of Directors of the Rainbow Cafe’ LGBTQ Center for seven years as community relations director, and board chair from 2017-2020, founding Unconditional, the LGBTQ Parent / Family Group, and SASI (Social Action for Southern Illinois). In 2018, she co-founded the Southern Il Pride Fest.
She has engaged in work with legislation and policy,
notably the Youth Mental Health Act banning conversion therapy for minors in Illinois, the Illinois Equal Restroom Access Bill, the Inclusive Curriculum Act, and KYSHA (Keeping Youth Safe and Healthy Act) for which she helped to earn the Richard J. Phelan Profile in Courage Award from Planned Parenthood Il Action.
